2011 NBA Sprite Slam Dunk Contest Review

Exactly how good was this year's Sprite Slam Dunk Contest? Read after the jump for my thoughts.

What a show!

This year's edition of the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest could not have been anymore entertaining. Blake Griffin was crowned this year's champion over Washington's JaVale McGee, Toronto's DeMar DeRozan, and Oklahoma City's Serge Ibaka. Everyone brought their "A" game and gave the crowd a heck of a show.

Here's some more thoughts:

What I liked:

Griffin, McGee, DeRozan, and Ibaka saved the Slam Dunk Contest with great showmanship and captivating athleticism. After last year's horrific showing, the NBA needed this contest to be a great one.

This year's Slam Dunk Contest was the greatest cumulative performance between all the participants.

Each contestant attempted slam dunks that were never seen or done before.

The coaches (Kenny Smith, Darryl Dawkins, Chris Webber, and Kevin Durant) were nice touches.

Despite not being at the table, Kenny Smith still made the dunk contest more entertaining.

Pamela McGee, former WNBA star and mother of JaVale McGee, was involved in her son's performance.

The wide range of props used in the contest.

What I didn't like:

The judges should have voted DeMar DeRozan and Serge Ibaka into the finals.

If you take away the car from Blake Griffin's dunk, it wasn't a great dunk.

JaVale McGee was allowed two do-overs on his dunk attempts.

Best Dunk: DeMar DeRozan's Show Stopper

Worst Dunk: Blake Griffin's Windmill

Most Underrated Dunk: Serge Ibaka's Free-Throw Line Leap

Best Prop Dunk: Blake Griffin uses car and choir

Final Thought:NBA Commissioner David Stern must personally thank Blake Griffin, JaVale McGee, DeMar DeRozan, and Serge Ibaka for the thrilling exhibition they put on. Each guy brought their athleticism to a different level and impressed everyone who watched. Not a single dunk in this competition was disappointing. An overall great contest and the best in a while.

Overall Grade: A
