Lakers-Nuggets in talks for 'Melo

Wow! Are the Nuggets really doing this? Turning to their Western Conference rival for a trade? And for their best player? Find out after the jump.

Well that's what is going on. As Chris Broussard has reported, the Lakers and Nuggets have ngaged in preliminary talks for the Denver star. The deal is believed to have Carmelo going to Los Angeles for some kind of a package surrounded by Lakers big man Andrew Bynum.

This seems like a very interesting deal. Broussard stated that the Lakers have yet to offer an official trade, but have spoke with Denver management. If it gets done, I think both teams come out winning.

Denver would get Andrew Bynum, an upcoming star in the NBA. Right now, he's the league's 2nd best true center. And if he stays healthy and continues to develop his game, he will turn out to be a scary force in the NBA. He is great offensively and an opposing figure on D. Denver would most likely look to get Derrick Caracter, a rookie who had teams calling the Lakers on Draft Day, and a first-round pick inthe future.

And there's the obvious implications of acquiring Carmelo Anthony for the Lakers. If they land 'Melo, the Lakers would have two of the best three scorers in the NBA, Kobe Bryant and Anthony. Anthony has also improved his defense over the past few seasons, which would add to the much criticized Lakers D. And finally, this could open a wide range of options for Jackson. he would likely start Gasol at center, Odom at power foward, 'Melo at small foward, and have Artest come off the bench as a defensive stopper. But going to the bench would either motivate Artest to step up his game or just anger the already disgruntled star.

In addition, Carmelo would have to sign an extension for this deal to be worthwhile for LA. Chris Broussard is indicating that Carmelo would be interested in signing a long-term deal. If this is the case, it's a clear win for both teams.
